Power and Thrust Comparison of Bio-mimetic Pectoral Fins with Traditional Propeller-based Thrusters

چکیده
A literature review, a datasheet review, and in-house experimental data were used to obtain a real-world comparison between bio-mimetic pectoral fins and traditional propeller-based thrusters. Only power consumption, forward thrust, and propulsive efficiency are compared. Scaling trends for both propulsion forms are discussed. Traditional thrusters are determined to be more efficient than currently available bio-mimetic pectoral fins for forward thrust. However, unlike traditional propeller-based thrusters, bio-mimetic thrusters can produce multiple degrees of freedom of thrust.

Efficiency of labriform swimming in the bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus).
Bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) swim in the labriform mode at low speeds, generating lift and thrust by beating their pectoral fins. The maximal power output available from the two largest pectoral fin adductor and abductor muscles, constituting half of the total pectoral girdle muscle mass, was measured in vitro and used to estimate the muscle mechanical power output during maximal labr...
متن کاملBio-inspired Robotic Fish with Multiple Fins
In order to improve the performance of AUVs in terms of efficiency and maneuverability, researchers have proposed biomimetic propulsion systems that swim using flapping fins rather than rotary propellers. This calls for the exploration of unique locomotion characteristics found in a variety of fish for use in underwater robots. (Sfakiotakis et. al., 1999) present a good review of fish swimming ...
متن کاملBio-inspired Robotic Cownose Ray Propelled by Electroactive Polymer Pectoral Fin
The cownose ray (Rhinoptera bonasus) demonstrates excellent swimming capabilities; generating highly efficient thrust via flapping of dorsally flattened pectoral fins. In this paper, we present a bio-inspired and free swimming robot that mimics the swimming behavior of the cownose ray. The robot has two artificial pectoral fins to generate thrust through a twisted flapping motion. Each artifici...
متن کاملDynamic Performance of a Bio-inspired Uuv: Effects of Fin Gaits and Orientation
The analysis of a proposed fin configuration change to a four-fin unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) is described in this paper. Based on unsteady flow computations and experimental fin measurements, the forces and moments produced by the fins are evaluated for two fin configurations. As a result of this study, a change is made to a design that enables improved control symmetry in thrust product...
متن کاملFour-fin Bio-inspired Uuv: Modeling and Control Solutions
This paper describes the modeling and control development of a bio-inspired unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) propelled by four pectoral fins. Based on both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and experimental fin data, we develop a UUV model that focuses on an accurate representation of the fin-generated forces. Models of these forces span a range of controllable fin parameters, as well as take...
